  1. General:
  • Over Three Decades of experience in R & D, teaching, production, technical management, and policy planning.
  1. Earlier served as: 
    • Rector, GIKI, (Ghulam Ishaq Khan Instt. Topi, KPK) 
    • Member of the Planning Commission, Islamabad.
    • Chief Scientist / DG (CC), Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission (PAEC), retired in 2005 after 36 years of service.
    • Visiting Scientist (CERN,Geneva) for the massive accelerator project,1999-2001.
  1. Director and Principal Author of the Vision 2030 Project, (2007)... a foresight exercise which attempts to examine where Pakistan might be in 2030.
    • Presented ‘Vision 2030’ to a group of Deputies in the German Bundestag (Parliament), on the peripheries of the "Conf. on Security and Cooperation in South Asia", Berlin, 2007.
      • Drew up the Policy Document "Making People Employable’ (2009), which emphasised reforms in Secondary Education through skills and training programmes for poverty alleviation and economic development.
  1. Started Pakistan’s Laser Programme in PAEC (Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission), and built up a small team into a powerful group of over 500 scientists / engineers/technicians, working in research & development, teaching, as well as production. Revenues of over US$ 150 million from local clients plus exports to Switzerland, Germany, Spain, Bangladesh, and Malaysia.
    • Supplied 40 Laser systems for the CERN accelerator, Geneva, the only Pakistani designed-and-manufactured system inside CERN.
    • Another key product: Laser Land Leveller for Agriculture. Nearly 1500 sold.

  1. Invited to the Summit of 100 scientists from EU and Asia in Japan in 2010 to plan for EU-Asia cooperation in large multinational programmes.
  2. Some Work in Policy and Strategy Formulation:
  • Member of the President’s Steering Committee which resulted in the establishment of the Higher Education Commission.
    • As Member, Planning Commission, looked after Higher Education, S&T, and Industry.
    • Headed several Task Forces in the Planning Commission.
  • Drew up the Implementation Strategy (timelines, costs, and necessary structural reforms) for the National Industrial Policy, 2011, for Ministry of Industries.

  • Member of the National Nanotechnology Commission (founding member). Helped start „seed‟ activities in this field in Pakistani Universities.

  • The Medium Term Development Framework, 2005-10 , Planning Commission: contributed 11 out of 34 chapters to this 5-Year Plan.

  2. Selection Committee for the Rhodes Scholarship, [Chairperson, 2010- 2013].

  3. Selection Committee which sends 6-10 scholars every year to spend a week with Nobel Laureates in Lindau (Germany) .... a founding member of the Committee.
