International Workshop on Advances in Food Analytical Methods: Oils/Fats and Phenolics December 4 - 6, 2013

Venue: COMSTECH Building, 33 Constitution Avenue, G-5/2, Islamabad, Pakistan

Food composition is roughly estimated using proximate chemical composition for micro- and macronutrients. But, we know that food contains a huge variety of value added molecules that append quality and specificity to a given matrix. Over the time analytical chemistry has matured at the level where small or macro molecules in food matrix can be identified or quantified with confidence. This workshop will focus on advanced and emerging analytical methods in food analysis. Applications of hyphenated techniques, like; LC/DAD, LC/MS, GC/MS, FT-IR specifically for characterization of oil/fats and plant phenolic compounds will be highlighted. Senior professors and scientists involved in research in the relevant field from Pakistan and abroad will conduct the academic sessions.

  • To provide basic understanding about analytical chemistry of phenolic compounds and oil/fats, and also to highlight the use of modern analytical techniques in food analysis.

  • To provide overview of ongoing research in food analytical chemistry.

  • To provide an opportunity to the participants to share ideas and develop future collaboration.

    Workshop Contents:

  • Introduction to oil/fat and phenolic compounds emphasizing their importance; brief theory of new and emerging analytical techniques; determination techniques for total phenolics and total oil content.

  • Handling liquid or solid samples (extraction/sample processing) and identification of oil components (fatty acid composition and unsaponifiable components).

  • Identification/quantitation of phenolics; applications in industry

    Targeted Participants:
