COMSTECH-PAEC-PNRA-IAEA Joint International Workshop on “Application of Nuclear Radiation in the Fields of Agriculture, Medicine, and Non-Destructive Testing, and Nuclear Regulatory Practices”

The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Standing Committee on Scientific and Technological Co-operation (COMSTECH) Islamabad, International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission (PAEC), and Pakistan Nuclear Regulatory Authority (PNRA), Islamabad invite applications from OIC members states for a training workshop on “Application of Nuclear Radiation in the Fields of Agriculture, Medicine, Non-Destructive Testing (NDT), and Nuclear Regulatory Practices” scheduled to be held from April 18 to 23, 2016 at COMSTECH, Islamabad. The workshop focuses on applications of nuclear techniques in agriculture and medicine, and non-destructive techniques for industry as well as nuclear safety and security in the context of nuclear regulatory practices.

 

Learning Objectives:

 At the end of the workshop, participants should be able to/learn about:

  1. Medical:

  • The utility of radiation in functional imaging and therapeutic applications of nuclear medicine.

  • The ability of radiation in the diagnosis of various diseases.

  • The role of ionizing radiation in the treatment of cancer and non-cancerous diseases.

     

  1. Agriculture

  • Identify areas benefiting from radiation technology in agriculture and biology as well as contributions of Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission in the development of agriculture sector.
  • Understand basics of biotechnology and its applications.

  • Recognize and tackle problems in all areas of agriculture sector.

  • Networking with various groups and experts for collaborative work and human resource development.
     

  1. Non-Destructive Testing:

  • General familiarity with industrial quality control and NDT technology.

  • The application of major NDT methods/techniques and their limitations.

     

  1. Nuclear Applications, Safety and Regulation:

  • Radiation safety and monitoring

  • Nuclear security

  • Educating radiation workers, public & stakeholders

  • Environmental monitoring to ensure public safety

  • Nuclear security regime andregulatory framework in Pakistan

  • Regulatory processes:Authorization, issuance of NOC import/export, inspection & enforcement in medical, agricultural and industrial radiography facilities etc.

  • Radiation emergency planning & preparedness in these facilities.

  • Recommendations for countries starting nuclear power programmes based upon Pakistan’s experience

Lectures will be given by over a dozen experts from various PAEC establishments, PNRA and IAEA.

Registration Fee:

There is no registration fee for participants from OIC Member States.  

Local Hospitality and Travel:

COMSTECH will provide free hospitality to participants selected from the OIC countries. Limited travel grants may be available. Airport pick-and-drop service on arrival and departure will be provided to all participants.
